I have always liked this white desk from West Elm and how it’ compact and fits in a room well.

Break Out of your Comfort Zone!

When re-designing a space it can be difficult to completely start fresh. Many of us hold on to the sense of style and design that we have and for many years. Even the thought of a new color scheme can seem far from design plans that represent our style. Yet, the best designs involve the task of using new furniture, patterns, or color, that you may not be considering immediately.

Using a brightly colored piece of furniture as a focal point, or even a trendy wallpaper print can feel like it is completely out of your normal decorating sense, but these kind of decisions are what make for a really interesting and creative design.

On the other hand, going the minimalist route—and scaling back with color and pattern can also feel far from what you are comfortable with. Truthfully, many modern interior designers chose to go with a more minimalist approach, using white and neutral colors in the majority of the space and accenting with natural elements (like house plants) or other decor. While this may feel a bit impersonal at first, it gives the opportunity to put photographs or other favorite household pieces as a focus, and gives a very clean feel.

Lastly, one interior approach that I always find risky when leaving my comfort zone involves centering a room around a theme. In the photo above, a vintage theme was used to design the room—and it is consistent throughout the furniture, color, fixtures, and decor. Having a design theme can give a room a great feel, although it may feel risky to direct your attention to one design purpose. It can help direct furniture, color, and decor selection in a fashion forward way.
